Nucleic Acids Research's annual database issue is out. This is a great place to start looking for info on the plethora of biology databases out there, ranging from such broadly useful databases as Genbank to the many highly specialized niche databases. The NCBI maintained meta-database of biological databases apparently has close to 1000 entries -- and I'm sure it will keep climbing.
In an ideal world, perhaps many of these databases would be integrated (or perhaps they all would be), but the reality is that small, passionately focused databases on topics near-and-dear to the curator's interests have the highest quality information.
