It is no more than a way to think about different conditions necessary for the evolution of complex life. Not surprisingly, estimates have put 'N' (the number of intelligent civilizations in the galaxy) at anywhere between 0 and 10^8 which is absurd. I continue to be astonished by people who see the 'equation' as having all the trappings of mathematical rigor when it's not even an educated guess.
